Flea Control

It is important to understand the lifecycle of the flea when trying to control and treat flea infestations on animals and in their environment. The lifecycle consists of :

  • The Adult flea
  • The flea egg
  • The flea larvae
  • The flea pupae

When a flea jumps onto a cat or dog ( the commonest flea is the cat flea and will live on dogs too) it quickly feeds and finds a mate. Having mated, a female flea can start laying eggs within 24 - 48 hours. They can produce thousands of eggs during their life span.

The eggs will drop off the animal into the bedding, carpets furniture and owner's beds if the animal shares it! The egg develops into a larva which can hatch within 1-6 days depending on the environmental temperature.

The larval stage of growth lasts from 5-11 days & during this time the larva feeds on the flea dirt (animal blood) and debris in the environment.

The larva then becomes a pupa ( similar to a caterpillar becoming a chrysalis) and undergoes the final change into a flea. The pupae can hatch in as little as 7-14 days or can remain dormant for months if the temperature drops.

Control depends on both treating ALL dogs & cats in a house as well as the house & environment. HOWEVER, the flea PUPAE are not affected by control drugs and so act as a RESERVOIR of infestation.

Mange

Mange is caused by a mite that burrows in the skin and is not visible to the naked eye, unlike the flea. It causes severe irritation and eventually to hair loss, scabby skin and a "mangey" look. The commonest type we see is fox mange and can be caught from foxes in gardens, parks on on the common. Initially there are few skin changes except some red irritated patches where the dog has been licking & nibbling. These progress into larger areas with hair loss & scabs. Signs are often seen on the dog's face by the eyes or on the ears, on the front legs, back legs & belly area. The mites can live in the environment so can be transmitted from pet to pet and can cause irritation and skin lesions in humans too. It can be treated with Advocate spot on.
