Dental treatment

Dental disease is often overlooked in our pets and the first signs of potential problems are often missed. It is important to regularly examine your pet’s mouth to examine the gums and teeth. Good oral hygiene plays an important role in the prevention of dental disease and brushing teeth from an early age will help prevent the build up of tartar and plaque. These will, if not removed, cause gum recesion and disease and lead to a loss of the teeth. The build up of plaque and tartar also cause a marked increase in oral bacteria which produce foul-smelling breath and halitosis. They are also a potential source of infection for other parts of the body and can have serious consequences in animals with heart disease.

If you notice that your pet has smelly breath or seems to have a problem eating then we would advise you to make an appointment with our Veterinary Surgeon at the earliest opportunity. He will advise you if your pet needs to be admitted for a general anaesthetic to allow the teeth to be scaled and polished or removed if necessary.

We routinely use a course of antibiotic before carrying out dentla treatment to reduce the bacterial infection and extended into the post operative period where there has been marked gum disease.

We routinely use our dental equipment for extractions and ultrasonic scaling and polishing in cats and dogs and trimming overgrown incisors in rabbits.
